Cyprus earned plenty of applause and left a positive impression, but came away empty-handed in their clash with Austria, falling 1-0 in Vienna.
The Cypriots created numerous opportunities — 15 shots in total — and came agonisingly close to scoring when Pittas struck the post in the first half. Despite their attacking efforts, they were undone in the 54th minute when Marcel Sabitzer converted from the penalty spot to give Austria the decisive goal.
For Austria, it was a third win in as many matches in the competition, while Cyprus suffered their third defeat in four games.
